How we research and rank record players and turntables, and what we do not do.

1. What we compare

• How you will listen: built-in speakers, powered speakers, a stereo receiver, Bluetooth speakers or headphones, or a Sonos system.
• What is built in: phono preamp, Bluetooth output, USB output, speakers, and whether you can switch the preamp off later.
• The parts that touch your records: cartridge and stylus type, whether tracking force is adjustable, and how easy the stylus is to replace.
• Everyday use: automatic or manual operation, speeds (33⅓, 45 and, rarely, 78 rpm), size, portability and battery power.

2. Where the information comes from

Brand specifications, manuals and support pages, independent reviews, preservation guidance from libraries and archives, and patterns in feedback from verified buyers.

3. What we do not do

We do not run lab tests, and we do not claim to have used the products we cover. We do not accept payment or free products for placement. We do not show prices, because they change every day; you see the current price on the product page.

4. Updates

We review our picks when a product is discontinued, redesigned or renamed, and when better evidence appears. Corrections are welcome at [email protected].
